Home > Becoming a Dominican Sister

If you feel drawn to a shared life of preaching, prayer, and study, witnessing to the Gospel through voluntary poverty, chastity, and obedience, then we invite you to explore with us whether God is calling you to join us in the Order of Preachers or the wider Dominican family.

If you are a woman who thinks that God may be calling her to life as a consecrated religious inspired by the charism of St Dominic, you are warmly invited to explore through the links below whether you may have a vocation as a Dominican sister or as an enclosed Dominican nun.

There are several congregations of Dominican sisters in England and Scotland, who live a common life under vows and who have an active apostolate or ministry outside the cloister:

The Sisters of St Catherine of Siena, based at Stone in Staffordshire, have four convents in England including a small noviciate house in Cambridge. The Stone sisters founded many schools and a number of nursing homes in the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of their younger members are now active in Catholic tertiary education and university chaplaincy.

The Congregation of St Catherine of Siena of Newcastle, Natal, South Africa (commonly known as the ‘Bushey Sisters’ from their Generalate at Bushey near Watford) have seven houses in this country with others in South Africa. The Bushey sisters also founded many schools and a number of nursing homes in the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of their members are now active in Catholic tertiary education in Oxford and Rome.

The Sisters of St Catherine of Siena of King William’s Town, South Africa, have a house at Stoke Golding, near Nuneaton.

The Dominican Sisters of St Joseph are at Lymington in Hampshire.

The Dominican Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are based in Zimbabwe but have a house at Crawley and at Greenwich in England.

The Congregation of Oakford, Natal, have convents in Pinner, Ruislip, Doncaster, and Shrewsbury, as well as in South Africa.

The latest congregation of Dominican sisters to open a convent in the UK are the Nashville Sisters who in 2013 opened a house at Elgin in Scotland.
